Velma Dinkley is the intellectual member of the gang, Mystery Inc and it’s usually due to her super sleuthing that the crime gets solved. When the series was created Velma was the one with the brains, but not the looks. She was about 4ft 9”, weighted about 95 pounds, had short brown hair and was extremely near-sighted. In fact, it was a near-sightedness that most of us remember. Usually during an episode she would lose her glasses and would cry “My glasses, I can’t see without my glasses” and be reduced to a bumbling idiot. When she got them back she would then revert back to being a “smarty-pants” again.
Velma is certainly very smart. She can read Chinese and Japanese as well as deciphering scientific formulas and operating communications equipment. She loves a good intellectual challenge and hates missing clues. For all her cleverness, she did reveal in one episode that she was afraid of clowns.
In the original television series Velma was definitely portrayed as been rather unattractive, dumpy and super nerdy, but in the movie version this changed. Played by Linda Cardellini, Velma changed from a baggy-sweatered nerd to a super cool smart chick. Her usual high necked sweater became tighter giving her a figure, and then the neck line became lower showing off her curves. This only goes to prove that a clever chick can look sexy.
