Fred Herman Jones was the leader of Mystery Inc., the one that drove the mystery van and the one who would famously say “Okay, Gang, let’s split up and search for clues”.  He always ended up with the girls, whilst Shaggy and Scooby went off together.

In the television series, Fred always wore blue pants, blue shirt, white sweater and a very dashing orange ascot tie. The Ascot was a craze in the 1960’s along with tye-dye shirts and bell bottoms.

The Ascot tie is a wide tie with a narrow neckband traditionally made of pale grey patterned silk.  It’s descended from a type of cravat that was popular in the early nineteenth century and named after The Royal Ascot races, an annual horseracing event that takes place in Ascot, England attended by royalty.  Traditionally the Ascot is worn with a formal morning dress, but if you want to look like Fred and wear it with a more casual outfit, this is how to do it.

First make sure that the long end of the tie is to the right. Cross the right end over the left end and back underneath.  Continue around, passing the right end across the front of the left.  Pass the right end up through the loop of the neck.  Bring right end down over the left end.  Adjust the bib at the throat to cover the knot and tuck under the shirt front leaving the neck open.

So, get yourself a Fred Scooby Doo costume and get in your mystery van.
